Sir,
This is an expression of gratitude and admiration for the insight of Justices McCarthy, Walsh and Hederman and the plaintiffs Mc Garry, O'Hara, Mulligan, Cremin, and Hamilton in the recent case of the proposed Sligo refuse dump versus the Carrowmore megalithic site. Their combined fortitude and farsightedness in preserving these national treasures for the study and wonderment of future generations is, to say the least, highly laudable.
My wife and I (retired) have visited most of Ireland's ancient cultural sites, including Carrowmore. I am an Irish citizen as well and a naturalised American and a subscriber to The Irish Times. It was heart-warming to read about these private individuals and public servants putting the aesthetically valuable ground above the temporal expediency of disposal of refuse. We sincerely hope this case will set a precedent for the protection of these time-honoured and hallowed places.
Yours, etc.,
Ken MacDonnell,
