Stone Mad

Sunday Tribune, January 1984

Book cover: The Stars and the Stones by Martin Brennan. Ancient art and astronomy in Ireland.

I was most disappointed by the "review" of the book, The Stars and the Stones (Sunday Tribune, 4th December) as I have more than a passing interest in our national heritage and in particular the monuments. This was in no way assisted by the attitude of Claire O'Kelly in her review.

I can understand how the suspicion with which Mrs O'Kelly regards Mr Brennan's book colours her view. As with all established theories, the holders find it difficult to accept a new slant on their entrenched views.

The letter you published in reply to the review (Sunday Tribune, 11th December) shed considerable light on the subject and demonstrated that there must be an alternative approach to megalithic art and megaliths in general. A vote of thanks is due to the book's author, Martin Brennan, for shedding new light on a heretofore darkened subject.
